You can pay an additonal charge through your rental company but this costs you more. Simply sign up for a CityLink or EastLink pass. You can also opt for a Melbourne Pass with covers you for travel on both CityLink and EastLink. This pass only covers you for 30 days but can be purchased up to midnight on the second day of travel. A route between Alice Springs and Ayers Rock through Aboriginal land has been made possible by co-operative agreeement with the land owners and the Central Land Council. This route offers you to explore Namatjira Drive without doubling back to the Stuart Highway. It allows a direct path through to Kings Canyon. However, be aware this route requires a 4X4 vechicle as the track, which takes approximately 3 hours to complete, is off road and very bumpy.
You are also required to purchase a permit (Approx.$3). This only allows you to travel through the area, making any roadside stops if required. Camping or venturing on to the land is prohobited. The permits can be purchased at the Information Centre in Alice Springs or Ayers Rock Resort.
